To support its vision of “empowering youth to use science in shaping a better future,” the Sciencenter, a hands-on science museum in Ithaca, NY, will develop a 400-square-foot exhibition and associated onsite and outreach programs. The project will focus on the topic of gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale, a widespread geologic formation covering much of New York state. The museum will develop the exhibition and host it for a minimum of seven years. The exhibits will inform the audience about the science, technology, economic, health, and social impacts of local gas energy development. Outreach programs at schools will have separate activities for youth (science content and skill building) and adults (science content and enhancing their role as facilitators of their children’s learning). Through this project, participants will learn about the impacts of local gas energy development.
