Log Number: MA-04-11-0139-11
The McCarl Coverlet Gallery will develop, market, implement, and evaluate a history-based program for school children, grades 1 to 6, entitled “Woven Into History.” The gallery’s collection of historic coverlets will allow children to explore mid-19th century American life as well as to discover the history of the coverlets and other American textiles, and how they relate to modern children’s lives. The gallery maintains a 386-piece jacquard-loomed collection that is one of the world’s largest collections of American “figured and fancy” handwoven coverlets. The project will help the gallery develop as a place of learning for children and families. It will also help meet a growing need in elementary education for interpretive, object-based history lessons inspired by primary source artifacts.
