The “Museum Career Ladder” (MCL) is a youth-centered employment and volunteer program developed by the Austin Children’s Museum. MCL is an expansion of the museum’s current successful Junior Volunteer Program, which supports teenagers in developing career and leadership skills through a series of trainings and work experiences in the safe and supportive museum environment. Museum staff will use project-based learning to train teenagers on exhibit content, and the teenagers will design hands-on activities that integrate art and science. Empowering teenagers with this responsibility will create a sense of ownership of their work and a deeper understanding of the content. The project will expose youth to positive role models and new career options in addition to increasing their knowledge and understanding of art, science, and the creative problem-solving process.
