The Museum of the Aleutians will use its grant for the fabrication and installation of a newly designed permanent exhibition, “The Aleutian Islands: Crossroads of the North Pacific.” The exhibit will interpret the art, culture, and heritage of Unangan/Aleut people who have inhabited the Aleutian Islands continuously for the past 10,000 years. The displays will connect past and present and alert visitors to evidence that can be found in the islands’ geographic names, man-made structures, and natural landscapes. The project will also strengthen the museum’s partnership with the Qawalangin Tribe and the Ounalashka Corporation, creators and operators of the nearby WWII Visitor Center, by telling a complementary story of the tragic experiences of Unangan people during that conflict.
