Mashantucket Pequot Indian Tribe (Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center)

Log Number: MA-04-10-0296-10

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe of Connecticut will open a new, permanent exhibit space in the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, a tribally owned and operated institution in southeastern Connecticut. This exhibition, modeled after a successful prototype from summer 2009, will consist of a re-created Pequot reservation house from the early 1900s and a multimedia installation, "Almost Vanished," that tells the story of the Pequot community between 1860 and 1940. Additional wall space and object cases will provide opportunities to explore the lives and experiences of Pequot families living on and off the reservation as they made a living, kept alive their cultural identity, participated in intertribal gatherings, and challenged the ever-changing Indian policies of Connecticut. The exhibit will open in late February 2011 and become the focus for a new hands-on learning program called "Be a Pequot Historian."
