“Youth Engagement in Science and Conservation” is a two-year project that will allow Woodland Park Zoo’s to develop a program model that fosters ecological literacy in young people twelve to nineteen years of age, with an emphasis on meeting underserved audiences. The project will engage youth in inquiry-based approaches to science learning and provide opportunities to explore careers in conservation and science. Participating youth will build a sense of stewardship through hands-on participation in real conservation—from restoring wildlife habitat to acting as “citizen scientists” alongside zoo staff and others. This project will serve as a model for other informal science learning institutions seeking to promote ecological literacy, as results will be shared with partner institutions.
