Sotterley Plantation

Log Number: MA-04-10-0211-10

Historic Sotterley Plantation will develop new interpretive materials and strategies for the historic site and community cultural center. One outcome of the project will be a written script for tour docents. The new formalized script will assure greater accuracy, consistency, and professionalism among interpreters and better integrate the story of slavery and the onsite slave cabin into the interpretation of the 300-year-old mansion. Other interpretive updates will include professionally recorded audio tours of the mansion and grounds and a ten-minute orientation video. Streaming audio and visual oral history materials, collected by the Sotterley Education Committee, will be added to the Web site. Well-crafted, up-to-date interpretive materials will expand the educational capacity of the site, draw in a wider and more diverse audience, attract a diverse interpretive staff, and increase support from the southern Maryland community.
