The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, will launch “Exploring the Medieval World: Connecting Art and Community,” a comprehensive schedule of activities focused on the museum’s significant collection of medieval art. A special exhibition, organized with the Cleveland Museum of Art and the British Museum, will place medieval reliquaries in their art historical and social context and consider how these Middle Age practices continue to inform contemporary religious practices as well as attitudes towards secular mementos and souvenirs. The schedule also includes two companion exhibits—one focused on reliquaries from Buddhist, Islamic, and African cultures and the other in participation with the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). The program will also includes public programs for school, family, and adult audiences and an interactive object display tool to connect visitors to the objects online and in the gallery.
