Telfair Museum of Art
Log Number: MA-04-10-0082-10
The Telfair Museum of Art will begin the first phase of a full-scale reinterpretation project at the Owens-Thomas House. This initial phase will include a symposium on the subject of urban slavery in Savannah as well as the publication of a scholarly book on the subject to be written for a broad audience of students, scholars, and the general public. The symposium and book, which will provide the foundation of historical information needed to inform the entirety of the project, will fill a gap of knowledge on the history of urban slavery at the Telfair’s properties, but also in Savannah and the nation as a whole. The complete picture of this largely unstudied form of slavery in Savannah—a microcosm of the nation during this time—will be told utilizing the Telfair’s own historic assets and stories.
