Amazement Square, the Rightmere Children’s Museum, will use its grant to fund the CityArts Mosaic Mural project. The mentoring project pairs at-risk students in grades seven through twelve and underserved community members in Central Virginia with professional artists and arts educators in order to transform a 4,800-square-foot wall in historic downtown Lynchburg, Virginia, into a publicly accessible work of art. The mural will trace the history of downtown Lynchburg, and its riverfront, from the Monacan period to the present. Through this program, participants will work in a diverse and multigenerational team setting as they learn the skills and techniques required to create a monumental-scale tile mosaic mural and develop an appreciation for the history of public art and its importance to downtown revitalization.
