Scurry County Museum

Purpose: Serving as Centers of Community Engagement The Scurry County Museum will build public access to the artifacts, documents, and photographs in its collections by digitizing its catalog. The museum's collections document a way of life that was rural and remote until World War II and include many items associated with the oil boom of 1948. Currently, the museum maintains all collections information on a paper card system. In this two-year project, the collections will be inventoried and classified, and records will be transferred into a new database. At the same time, the long-term gallery exhibit "Tracks Across the Land" will be redesigned. The artifacts, documents, and photographs associated with this exhibit will be the first to be digitized, to respond to public interest in the exhibit. The museum serves an economically depressed area of 3,000 square miles in western Texas; its audience includes county residents, including students; tourists; and residents of the six surrounding counties. The museum will use technology to reach out to children and families who are unable to visit in person.
