Telfair Museum of Art

Log Number: MA-02-04-0245-04

Purpose: Supporting Lifelong Learning The Telfair Museum of Art (the Southeast's oldest public art museum) will create a comprehensive series of curriculum-based K to 12 teacher resource materials, a museum field trip program, and related family education events to coincide with the opening of the museum's new Jepson Center for the Arts. Curriculum-based materials will be organized around five themes relating to the architecture and permanent collection exhibitions of the Jepson Center: art and mathematics, art and language/literature, art and history, art and technology, and art and place. Resource materials will include one teaching poster from each of the themes and CDs of additional examples from the collection, and will be distributed free to all art specialists and grade-level lead teachers in Chatham, Effingham, and Bryan counties. The lesson plans will also be posted in PDF form on the museum's main Web site. The museum will offer a tour program to all fourth grade classes in the Savannah Chatham Public Schools. Training sessions led by museum staff will prepare teachers to use the materials with their classes. The museum will also hold a student exhibition and a Family Sunday Open House to provide opportunities for family interaction in the museum and informal learning in the galleries of the new facility. The project will establish the new Jepson Center as a center of learning and engagement.
