Purpose: Supporting Lifelong Learning The Gore Place site is a large, open setting of fields, gardens, and woodlands in an urban area nine miles west of Boston. It is one of the largest open spaces remaining in the Boston metro area. Preserving, restoring, enhancing, and maintaining the 1806 Gore mansion and its collections, outbuildings, and grounds for the enjoyment and education of the public are central to the mission and strategic plan of Gore Place. This project will establish and interpret the 35-acre Christopher (1758 to1827) and Rebecca (1759 to 1834) Gore Mansion House Lot at Gore Place as an outdoor exhibit space. This project will broaden the interpretation of the early nineteenth-century Gore estate to include the landscape surrounding the Gore mansion as well as guided tours of the mansion. The activities supported by this project will be archaeological investigations, interpretive signage (including braille transcriptions), tree identification labels for Gore-era trees, outdoor benches, and a map of the grounds for visitors. The activities will encourage visitation by informing and educating the public about the historic features of the Gore estate and plans for future restoration activities.
