Purpose: Sustaining Cultural Heritage The Yarmouth Historical Society is the only repository in the town of Yarmouth, Maine, that collects artifacts related to the town's history. Its collections reflect all aspects of community life and crucial pieces of the area's history, including information about early Native American artifacts. This project-an inventory of three-dimensional objects and the computerization of object collections records-directly addresses the collections care and management aspect of the sustaining cultural heritage goal. A shelf-by-shelf inventory will be taken of the 3,000 artifacts in the objects collection. Collection records will be reviewed for accuracy and completeness and entered into collections management software to create a computerized cataloging system for objects. Digital photos will be taken of 300 objects, and existing photographs of another 300 objects will be scanned. A tool consultant will identify objects and assist with nomenclature. At the completion of the project, the historical society will have a fully operational database in collections, and a version of this database will also be installed on a new public-access computer.
