The Palace of the Governors, Museum of New Mexico with the New Mexico State Library, Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe, and other museums, libraries, and archives throughout the state will present information about the birth of small presses in New Mexico. Speaking Volumes will coordinate the efforts of the state museum and state library to strengthen and support collections-based cultural institutions in small, rural, underserved, and low-income communities across the state to achieve the following goals: promote innovation by combining traditional library reading programs with a hands-on book arts component; help museums, libraries, and archives fulfill their potential as partners and sponsors for communities of lifelong learners; expand local programming partnerships between cultural institutions, schools, and community groups; cultivate attendance and participation in cultural activities by new and diverse constituencies; improve public access to New Mexico's literary and technological history and the contributions of the state's diverse cultures; and disseminate historical and cultural information via public programs, print, and digital media. Scheduled to open at the Palace of the Governors in December 2004, Speaking Volumes is an exhibition and education outreach project that presents a comprehensive history of private press printing in New Mexico.
