Then University of Maryland, College of Information Studies will develop and evaluate a phased Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI)-powered knowledge system that progressively extracts layered metadata, preserves provenance, links every extracted fact back to its source page, and supports a public-facing conversational interface for searching and analyzing the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Gift collection, correspondence with ordinary Americans during the Great Depression and World War II. The intended results include: a functioning GenAI powered public access system with page-level archival source links; a structured database from knowledge graph connecting people, places, gifts, topics, and sentiments; a replicable agentic GenAI workflow for use by other libraries and archives; and measurable impact through community engagement, feedback, and implementation. The beneficiaries are the public, educators, students, researchers and historians.
