The GAMER Group at the University of Washington, partnering with the Video Game History Foundation and The Strong National Museum of Play, will conduct applied research to improve the accessibility of critical video games in cultural heritage institutions for educational purposes. Through qualitative interviews and an online survey, this project will identify key games for game history and education, assess their accessibility, and document current practices for accessing game hardware and artifacts. Deliverables will include a comprehensive list of games with metadata and accessibility information, a best practice guide for navigating game accessibility issues, and publications reporting research findings. By enhancing access to significant video games and preserving their digital heritage, this project will benefit cultural heritage personnel working with game collections, game historians and researchers, developers, and educators who use games in their educational programs.
