Grand Rapids Public Museum

The Public Museum of Grand Rapids is partnering with several school districts in the Grand Rapids area; the Kent District Libraries; and the City of Grand Rapids Office of Children, Youth and Families in a unique museum-school-community project reaching children in kindergarten through grade seven. The museum plans to develop and implement a comprehensive literacy program called Read and Connect. The project, which will be developed and implemented over a two-year period, will use exhibits and artifacts as hands-on learning tools for literacy.. The program will eventually be integrated into the museum's regular program offerings. It will serve as a model for many different types of museums for integrating literacy skills within their own exhibits.
