For several years the issue of whether art, and other cultural works, looted by the Nazis is hanging in American museums has engaged the attention of survivors and their heirs, scholars, and the museum community. The American Association of Museums, in cooperation with the museum community, will create The Nazi-Era Provenance Internet Portal, which will serve as a searchable registry of objects in U.S. museums. This information portal will both assist museums in fulfilling their responsibility to make Nazi-era provenance information accessible and provide researchers and claimants with a central location from which to begin their research. Initially focusing on European paintings and Judaica, the portal will eventually include sculpture, drawings, and other objects.
