Rochester Institute of Technology (Image Permanence Institute)

The Image Permanence Institute at Rochester Institute of Technology will consolidate knowledge of sustainable HVAC operation in libraries and demonstrate a field tested methodology by which libraries could achieve significant improvements to their systems’ energy efficiency without placing collections preservation at risk, using only their own internal staff and existing resources. IPI will work with three partner libraries to test and refine the methodology, which will be published at the conclusion of the project. Rather than emphasizing new equipment and controls, the techniques used depend on identifying the most significant opportunities for improved operation and applying risk-managed approaches. Additionally, facilities staff and collections care staff will work together in this model, taking incremental steps with measurable feedback on preservation quality and operating costs.
