The Las Vegas Clark County Library District will conduct research to uncover patterns, motivations, and interests of today’s public library customers and accelerate the adoption of customer data mining to improve public library practice. Research findings about patrons in nine metropolitan areas throughout the United States will answer questions, such as “who are the public library’s ’best customers’?,” “how do customers use library materials?,” and “are there customer segments not being reached that should be reached?,” among others. This information will be widely disseminated to public library managers, giving them new tools to develop services to retain existing customers, attract new customers, and be relevant for future customers. The project will also inform understanding about the ways librarians can use customer data to anticipate future demand as well as design effective future service strategies, communications and community partnerships that match customer interests, behaviors and learning preferences, present and future.
