James Madison University's (JMU) Libraries and Educational Technologies department will produce a series of computer games to help students develop health literacy and information literacy skills. All JMU students are required to achieve competency in information literacy and must complete an online interactive tutorial (Go for the Gold) as part of their first-year general education requirements. They must also pass the Information Seeking Skills Test before they can register as sophomores. The health component is designed for students interested in the health care professions. The Association for College and Research Libraries has designed JMU a "best practice" institution for its leadership in integrating information literacy into its curriculum. The project will be conducted in collaboration with JMU's Center for Instructional Technology and will research and evaluate whether traditional information literacy skills can be acquired through game-like experiences and determine if this approach is more effective with university students than current text-based approaches.
