Syracuse University will extend its successful S.O.S. for Information Literacy program to grades 9-12 and will also create a higher education version. Information literacy is the ability to identify an information need, find and evaluate appropriate information to meet the need, and use the information effectively. Librarians teach information literacy skills to students and educators at all levels. IMLS funded the first S.O.S. (Situation variables, Outcome variables Strategy) project in 2002 for kindergarten through eighth grades, with the creation of a freely accessible Web-based multimedia resource of standards-based lesson plans, support materials, and examples of "best practice" real-life demonstrations that exemplify specific techniques used by practitioners for creating and delivering effective information literacy lessons.
