The University of Georgia and its partners, Georgia Public Broadcasting and the Georgia Humanities Council, will create the Civil Rights Digital Library Initiative to promote an enhanced understanding of the civil rights movement through digital video archive of historical news film. A Web-accessible digital library of the civil rights movement with learning tools that deliver resources such as multimedia productions, interactive timelines, maps, articles, lesson plans, and activities for multiple levels of learning, will be produced. The initiative will employ cross-disciplinary approaches and develop a seamless infrastructure for learning through a partnership involving digital library and information technology professionals, archivists, humanities scholars, academic publishers, and public broadcasters. It will also demonstrate methods for connecting thematically related digital collections and test a model for greater customization, contextualization, and functionality over current systems.
