Gadsden Arts Center and Museum

The Gadsden Arts Center and Museum (GACM) will partner with the Tallahassee Museum and artist Mary L. Proctor to create “I am Just the Messenger", a year-long exhibition of work by missionary Mary Proctor. The exhibition records, presents, and preserves the work and story of one of the last living artists represented in GACM's Southern Vernacular Art collection, a self-taught artist and woman of color. "I am Just the Messenger” will be informed by interviews with and presentations by the artist, shared through interpretive adult and school programs, and archived through an oral history and exhibition video. The exhibit will address the needs to increase women artists represented in the GACM Permanent Collection and to increase scholarship on women artist of color.
