Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC Library and Archives)

The Appalachian Mountain Club Historic Photograph Preservation Initiative will focus on stabilizing the environment in which its film-based negative and slide collections are stored. The club will use this grant to acquire a frost-free refrigerator to store fragile items in the collection at constant temperature and humidity levels. An efficient air-conditioning unit will be purchased for the general library space to bring overall fluctuations in temperature and humidity under control. Negatives will be removed from their original sleeves and placed in acid-free sleeves and boxes and bagged on cold storage shelving. Slides will be stored in divided steel drawers in the refrigerator unit. Proper storage of the collection will prevent further deterioration, making the materials available to researchers and other members of the public for years to come.
