The Lewes Historical Society will conserve the drumhead and rim of the bass drum that belonged to the Boys' Brass Band of Lewes (circa 1907-1914). They will then use it, along with photographs and documents about the band in its collections, in an interpretive display about small town life in the early twentieth century. The drum will be of particular interest to schoolchildren because the band members, ages 7 to 17, were the same age as many of the students who visit on class trips and during the Society's museum tours. today's parents are likely to find reason to relate to the object, too, because records show that then, as now, parents paid for band uniforms and instruments.
