The Hearst Museum will create a Media Collections Center to protect its 200,000-item audiovisual anthropology collections from deterioration. Global in nature and interdisciplinary in their significance, these photographs, films, negatives, and sound recordings provide documentation of the history of anthropology as well as of the people and places that have been subjects of research since 1901. Staff and work-study students will work with a consulting specialist to prepare the collections for cold storage in freezers outfitted with monitoring probes. Their efforts will both safeguard the media collections and increase safe access to them.
