The North Carolina Museum of Art will undertake the conservation treatment of 32 African objects and textiles, which are in critical need of stabilization and require conservation before they can be safely handled for display and re-housing in a new storage facility at the museum. The African collection, a significant part of the museum’s holdings, encompasses more than 150 objects from across the continent. The greatest strengths are in the tradition-based arts of Sub-Saharan Africa, in particular the Yoruba (Nigeria), Kuba (Congo), and Akan (Ghana) peoples. The objects were identified as a priority for conservation and care in a detailed survey of the textiles and costumes collections conducted during the summer of 2007.
