University of Michigan (Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, University of Michigan)
Log Number: IC-01-11-0233-11
The University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum will assess the native plant communities growing on its four properties comprising more than 750 acres. A natural areas consultant will work with students to map and assess the at-risk communities for conservation care and then itemize a set of natural area stewardship recommendations. These management recommendations will be used to establish long-term conservation strategies, inform the educational use of these communities while minimizing negative impacts, and direct future research by students and faculty at colleges and universities throughout the region. Quarterly Web page updates will make project information available to the public and interested professionals, and a regional meeting for public parks, non-profits, and other land-owning parties will provide a forum for sharing lessons learned and providing assistance in planning similar assessments for other properties.
