By Susan Hildreth Director, IMLS I’m excited to tell you about two new federal partnerships that will enhance the work of public libraries as providers of e-government services. Our partnerships with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will result in exciting new resources and tools for public libraries, including two webinars scheduled for December. IMLS and the CFPB are partnering to develop financial education tools and share best practices with the public library field. IMLS is helping the bureau’s Office of Financial Education work with local public libraries, library associations, state and federal agencies, and national financial education leaders to generate interest in financial education and to provide programs and build collections for libraries of all sizes and in all communities. The goal of our partnership is to provide tools and materials to help libraries provide free, unbiased financial information and referrals in their communities, and to build local partnerships and promote libraries as community resources. In June of this year, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Alejandro Mayorkas and I signed an agreement to provide immigration and citizenship information to public libraries across the country. The agreement recognizes that libraries serve as a vital resource for immigrant communities. Through this partnership, we will help equip libraries with information, educational materials, and training resources on immigration and citizenship. The primary goal of this collaboration is to ensure that librarians have the necessary tools and knowledge to refer their patrons to accurate and reliable sources of information on immigration-related topics. As part of this effort, USCIS will conduct a national webinar series beginning with a session on basic immigration procedure and benefits and online resources available for librarians. We invite staff at public libraries to participate in both these free webinars: CFPB Webinar: Wednesday, December 4, 3:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m. ET Click here for more information. USCIS Webinar: Thursday, December 12, 12:30 p.m.—2:00 p.m. ET Click here for more information. Please join us for these informative sessions and stay tuned for new developments from IMLS and its federal partners.
