Pathways Internships

Overview
The Internship Program is designed for current students in an accredited high school, professional, vocational, and trade school as well as the other qualifying educational institutions. This program allows managers to hire current students outside of their area of study under certain situations. You must be a currently enrolled student to be considered for a Pathways Internship.

Development
The Internship Program encourages, but does not require mentoring, training, or an IDP for development. Some positions will be available for conversion to permanent positions, others will not. If you are unsure whether the position you are applying to will have the option for any of these benefits, please refer to the job announcement and/or contact the hiring manager.

Pathways Recent Graduates

The Recent Graduates Program was developed for candidates who have completed a degree in the past two years. Recent Graduates may have a two-year/vocational degree up through Masters/Ph.D. IMLS recognizes the importance of continued development for those with new careers in the government. Because of this there are strict guidelines for successfully completing the program.

Development
All Recent Graduates participants must complete the following requirements in order to be considered for conversion to a permanent position:

  • Maintain a mentor,
  • Complete 40 hours of training,
  • Develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP).

Pathways Presidential Management Fellows

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program was re-vamped in the Pathways regulations. This OPM-run program is designed to provide highly educated candidates to managers for further development. The updated regulations created greater flexibility for managers to use alternate forms of training to meet the 80-hour requirement and gave managers additional flexibility for conversion.
