Associate Deputy Director
Anthony D. Smith is the Associate Deputy Director for Discretionary Programs in the Office of Library Services at IMLS. His portfolio includes oversight of programs like Accelerating Promising Practices for Small Libraries, the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program, National Leadership Grants for Libraries, and Native American Library Services grants. Smith previously served at IMLS as the Senior Program Management Officer for Library/Museum Collaboration within the National Leadership Grant (NLG) Program from 2010 to 2013.
Prior to his work in the federal government, Anthony served as the Director of Digital Initiatives and Services at the University of Miami and the Coordinator for the Digital Library Center at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. At both institutions, he led a variety of initiatives to support the digital transformation of higher education.
Anthony holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and a Master of Science in Library and Information Service from the University of Tennessee. Anthony also serves on the Board of Visitors for the University of Tennessee’s College of Information and Communications.
