Encouraging Family Learning in History Museums

The USS Constitution Museum in Boston is opening a new exhibit, “All Hands on Deck: A Sailor’s Life in 1812” to bring to life a sailor's
day-to-day existence aboard the world’s oldest commissioned seafaring vessel. Using grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the museum spent more than three years studying what engages school-age visitors and their parents. A Web site allows other museums to adapt the USS Constitution Museum’s experience to their needs. Read more.

WebWise 2009: Digital Debates

The 10th annual WebWise Conference on Libraries and Museums in the Digital Age was held in Washington, DC, February 25-27, 2009. IMLS partnered with The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to host this year’s signature event. The theme of the 2009 conference was “Digital Debates.” Sessions featured library and museum leaders as well as experts outside of the cultural heritage community who stimulated conversation and reflected on the challenges posed by emerging technologies and their effects on the roles that libraries and museums will play in the next decade. The conference opened with a half-day pre-conference workshop on the afternoon of February 25, followed by the opening reception. The main conference began on February 26 and concluded at noon on February 27. The conference was held at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill.
