IMLS Awards More Than $244,000 in Library Funds for the Pacific Territories, Freely Associated States and U.S. Virgin Islands
Washington, DC—The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) today announced the recipients of seven competitive library grants totaling $244,388 for the Pacific Territories, Freely Associated States, and U.S. Virgin Islands.
IMLS provides support for these entities through a competitive process administered by Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL). This year’s grants were awarded to the following:
- Feleti Barstow Public Library – Pago Pago, American Samoa
- Joeten Kiyu Public Library – Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands
- FSM National Government – Palikir, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia
- Guam Public Library System – Hagatna, Guam
- Republic of Palau – Koror, Palau
- Alele, Inc. – Majuro, Republic of Marshall Islands
- Executive Office of the Government of the Virgin Islands – St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
"The remote island geography creates challenges for communities in the Pacific and U.S. Virgin Islands. These grants will go a long way towards addressing their unique information needs," said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew. "Through investment in new library offerings such as gaming materials, as well as ongoing support of mobile library services, technology infrastructure, cultural heritage preservation, and professional development for library staff, IMLS is helping the residents of the Pacific Territories, Freely Associated States, and U.S. Virgin Islands get the library services they need."
