The Portland Art Museum will complete its Japanese Print Initiative (JPI), through which its collection of Japanese prints will be made accessible online. The project will enable the museum to create and publish high resolution images that meet both federal and international image standards. All objects in the collection will be cataloged with the goal of enhancing search, retrieval, and discoverability in the museum's collections management system and online repositories. Combined cataloging, imaging, and web development efforts will result in the publication of the entire Japanese print collection online with useful, meaningful, and accessible images and metadata that will be shared via an open access policy. The project will significantly improve the museum's ability to photograph Japanese prints, which have fine details-inscriptions, markings, seals, metallic pigments-that are of vital importance to the study and understanding of the works.
