The Philadelphia Museum of Art is collaborating with the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum) to curate an exhibition of African art and artifacts and develop interpretive programming to engage Philadelphia's African American, African immigrant, and K-12 student and family audiences. Featuring more than 200 objects from the holdings of the Penn Museum, this six-month exhibition will present a new approach to the presentation and interpretation of African artifacts, combining a visual arts perspective with an anthropological approach that will invite visitors to explore the cultural, ritual, and functional significance of the objects on view. The exhibit will be uniquely organized according to the interests of local community members in line with shared museum priorities surrounding audience development and outreach.
