Historic Hillsborough Commission (Burwell School Historic Site)

The Burwell School Historic Site in Hillsborough, North Carolina, will produce a series of biographical comic books and corresponding lesson plans to engage fourth- and fifth-grade students with United States history. Each book will spotlight a local figure from the 1800s who achieved prominence despite facing adversity. Burwell School staff will collaborate with local children’s authors and artists to write and illustrate four books. An educational consultant will be contracted to develop lesson plans that align with fourth and fifth-grade history curriculum. The project will result in free educational resources, available in both print and digital formats, benefiting teachers and students. Additionally, this initiative will broaden community awareness of local history, fostering a deeper connection to the region's past.
