Log Number: IGSM-255646-OMS-24
The New Mexico State University Museum will complete an inventory and assessment of its archaeological holdings to improve intellectual control and public access to the collection. Representing human habitation of the Southwest from the earliest known Paleoindian occupation through the late 1800s, the collection includes regional pottery and projectile point styles key in making identifications and training students. Museum staff will hire and mentor a graduate assistant and interns to assist with the inventory, assessment, and photography of objects. The resulting catalog data will be entered into the museum’s collections management system and online database. As a Hispanic Serving Institution, this project will provide valuable hands-on training to students and contribute to amplifying the museum workforce. Gaining intellectual control over its archaeological holdings and making them accessible will enable staff to better use and develop the collection, benefiting students, faculty, and researchers.
