After experiencing great success with Weight Watchers, Gladys Leeks tried to get a job working for the company but couldn’t because she couldn’t read. She found Project Second Chance at the Contra Costa County Library in Pleasant Hill, California. Through the help of a expert tutor, she learned to read and was able to get the job she wanted. In this video, library director Barbara L. Flynn speaks about the importance of the Project Second Chance program and others like it.
The Contra Costa County Library was one of 10 winners of the 2012 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for libraries and museums that are serving their communities in exceptional ways. Winners of the 2013 National Medal for Museum and Library Service will be announced on April 23, 2013.
